Running in the Twin Cities: Around the lakes, in the city, and on the trails
Summertime in Minnesota is a beautiful thing. I know this because I’ve survived 27 winters in Minnesota. Once the warmth and sunshine is here, I try to spend as much time outside as possible. In other words, I’ve had plenty of time to explore, and I am excited to share several of my favorite places to run (or walk!) in the Twin Cities area. I’ll also be sharing several of my favorite running races happening this summer!
...Around the lakes
“The Lakes.” A term you’ll hear many Minnesotans use, which 99% of the time are referring to Lake Calhoun, Lake Harriet, and Lake of the Isles. Use this term and people will think you’ve been here your whole life. Located in Uptown, these lakes are perfect for a summertime run or a casual night walk. The distance around the three lakes are as follows: Lake Calhoun (3.10 miles), Lake of the Isles (2.60 miles), and Lake Harriet (2.75 miles). On nice days, the paths can get busy, but don’t let that scare you. “The Lakes” are a must see.
...In the city
Most people think living in the city means no places to run, right? WRONG! Fun fact – Minneapolis is consistently rated one of the top cities in America for running and biking (google it if you don’t believe me)! A few of my favorites are the paths along the Mississippi River, over the Stone Arch Bridge and the Cedar Lake Trail (which leads to many other trail options). Add these places into your next run – I promise they won’t disappoint.
...On the trails
A hidden summertime gem in the Twin Cities would absolutely be our parks. One that stands out to me is Theodore Wirth Park. There are many things you can do at Theodore Wirth during the summer, but the trail running is the best. There are serval distance options and difficulty levels for the trails, and all the trails are beautiful (trail details here). If you’ve never done a true trail run before, they are wooded, the paths are uneven, hilly, and covered in rocks and sticks. The Theodore Wirth trails offer a true “trail run” experience. The trails make for great a hike or bike as well!
The best resource I’ve found for finding all varieties of races is Running in the USA. The races listed below can all be found here, and I’ve linked to the actual race’s site. Also, I’ve done many of the races listed below, and highly recommend you check them out as well!=
